Efforts to Restore Wolves in Colorado

Thousands of years ago, wolves have been shown to inhabit the landscape of Colorado. And yet, this is no longer the case for the past 70 years for Colorado wolves. That is why there is a growing effort to bring back the heritage of having wolves in Colorado. The natural balance of Colorado’s landscape has been affected negatively with their absence. That is because they are key species in the environment. Through The Rocky Mountain Wolf Project, there are now more opportunities to bring wolves in Colorado back and restore the natural balance of Colorado for the present and future generations. For more details on the efforts to restore wolves in Colorado, make sure to read this article until the end.

The wolf population can thrive in the remote and expansive public lands of Western Colorado. Nonetheless, before wolf reintroduction can take place, wolves still need the help of humans. This should not be a problem with Colorado being biologically viable but socially viable as well. According to polls made for the past 20 years, 60 to 70 percent of Coloradans give their support to wolf reintroduction in Colorado.

After gray wolves have been reintroduced in Yellowstone National Park, they proceed to expand and thrive in the area of the Northern Rockies. If you take a look at the Southern Rockies of western Colorado, though, these wolves are still absent. This area has been shown to be the missing link for the wolf conservation efforts of the Rocky Mountains. Only with restoration of Colorado wolves can all North American population be reconnected starting from Alaska to Mexico. With completion of these efforts can the conservation and biological value of wolf reintroduction be significant.

Defenders of Wildlife is one of the many participants of this site that help to increase the understanding of the public about the ecology and behavior of and options to restore gray wolves. Twenty organizations make up the project to ensure that wolves are restored in Colorado. For more information about these efforts, view here to learn about The Rocky Mountain Wolf Project.

The first thing that would help people get a better grasp about wolf restoration is to show them the implications of having wolves living in the ecosystem. For a long time, wolves have always been shown to be negative species from bedtime stories and the like. All of these things are just works of fiction and are not accurate. For wolf restoration to take place, a different story must be told. To help people better understand about wolves, a more accurate story must be told.

For the past years, wolves have always been present in Colorado to benefit its wildlife. Wolves roaming around the landscape of Colorado should be something that future generations should still be able to appreciate.
